How you can have your surgery performed at the Outpatient Surgery Center of Hilton Head?

Your family practice physician or specialist may refer you to a surgeon for a particular, non-emergency procedure needed for treatment. You may request specifically that your procedure be performed at the Outpatient Surgery Center of Hilton Head (OSCHH).

If your surgeon does not have privileges to operate at OSCHH, but does have privileges at an area hospital (in Beaufort or Jasper County), you may request that your surgeon apply for privileges. Once the surgeon completes an application and provides their documentation of credentials and licenses, and that documentation has been verified, temporary privileges can be granted in a very short time.

What will happen prior to surgery at OSCHH?

You will normally be asked to go to the surgeon's office for a pre-surgery examination. Most often, the surgeon's office staff will give you a date for surgery before you leave the office. They will also give you instructions as to what you must do to prepare yourself for the procedure. This may involve dietary and medication changes for a period of time prior to the date of surgery.

Several days prior to the date of surgery, a member of the OSCHH staff will contact you by phone to verify your insurance information, give you further pre-operative instructions and inform you of the time for your surgery and the time you need to arrive at OSCHH. A representative of the OSCHH billing office will also contact you to give you an estimate of your charges, the expected reimbursement from your insurance company, the amount of your co-insurance payment and any other uncovered charges that you will need to pay at OSCHH prior to your surgery.

What will happen when you arrive at the OSCHH?

When you come in the door, you will be greeted by a receptionist, who will ask you to sign or fill out some brief documents and to pay any balance due per your conversation with the billing office. You will be mostly pre-registered, so the entire admission process should take only a few minutes. After a short wait in the comfortable reception area, you will be escorted by a nurse to the receiving and preparation area and made ready for your procedure.

When your procedure is finished, you will be taken to a private recovery room to recover from your anesthesia or sedation. You will be constantly monitored during your recovery process and will be given a beverage and snack at the appropriate time. When you are ready, you will be examined by your surgeon, given post-operative instructions by a nurse, and released to be driven home or to your destination.

Can you come to (and leave from) OSCHH alone?

Since most ambulatory surgery procedures will require you to be at the OSCHH for approximately 1 ½ to 3 hours, and since you will be legally impaired due to sedation or anesthesia for 12-24 hours following your procedure, you will need to be released to a legally responsible adult who can sign for your post-operative orders and drive or escort you home.

Should you bring anything to OSCHH?

The only thing you will need here is a means of payment for any charges due prior to surgery. Any valuables or jewelry should be left at home. If you arrive wearing anything of this sort, you will be asked to give it to your escort for safekeeping before you leave the reception area for surgery. When you dress in surgical attire, you will be given a personal bag for your clothing which will accompany you throughout your treatment an be with you in your recovery room after your procedure. You will be able to take this bag with you when you leave, to be used as a beach bag or tote bag for other purposes.

What will happen after surgery?

You will receive a phone call from a nursing representative of OSCHH within 24-48 hours after you have been discharged to go home. This call will be to check on your healing or recuperation and to answer any questions you may have about your surgery or recovery. You may also receive a call from your surgeon's office for the same purposes

Should you have any difficulty with your recovery, including any symptoms of excessive discomfort or infection, you should immediately contact your surgeon's office.
